In a poignant turn of events, Colonel Manpreet Singh, one of the three brave souls martyred during a gunfight with terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir’s Anantnag, had a heartbreaking conversation with his brother mere hours before his tragic demise. The Colonel had assured his brother that they would reconnect in the evening, a promise that sadly went unfulfilled. As the family copes with this devastating loss, Colonel Singh’s wife remained unaware of his passing.

Tragic Loss in Anantnag

Colonel Manpreet Singh leaves behind his wife, Jagmeet Kaur, a dedicated schoolteacher, along with their six-year-old son and two-year-old daughter. The family resides in Chandigarh. Initially, Jagmeet Kaur was informed of her husband’s injury, a cruel prelude to the tragic news that followed.

Last Words Shared

Speaking to India Today, Virender Gill, Colonel Singh’s brother, recounted their final conversation. It took place at 6:45 am, with Colonel Singh having to cut it short due to his busy schedule. “I spoke to him this morning at 6:45 am, and he said he is busy and would call me later in the evening when the Army operation is over. We were informed about his injury later in the afternoon,” shared Virender Gill

The mortal remains of the Army Rashtriya Rifles unit Commanding Officer will be brought to Chandigarh, where the final rites will be performed today.

The Shadow Group’s Claim

The banned Resistance Front, believed to be an offshoot of the Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack. This group is suspected of carrying out a previous attack on army personnel on August 4, resulting in the tragic loss of three brave soldiers.

Colonel Singh’s Heroic Journey

Colonel Singh’s journey in the same unit spanned almost five years, with the initial three years spent as the second-in-command. In 2021, he was honored with the Sena Medal for Gallantry for his courage in neutralizing terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir who had fired indiscriminately.

A Tragic Day in Anantnag

On that fateful day, Major Ashish Dhonack and Deputy Superintendent Humayun Bhat, alongside Colonel Singh, laid down their lives during the gunfight in the Kokorenag area. The officers sustained critical injuries in the encounter, and a fellow soldier also lost his life. The whereabouts of another soldier remain unknown, with fears of severe injuries.
